WEATHER CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| Low amount of snow was accumulated during winter. Spring was relatively early, but return of cold weather in the second half of May resulted in average terms of phenological events. Summer was dry. |

Breeding conditions:
| Numbers of blood-sucking insects were the lowest in 26 years of observations, but this had no apparent impact on birds. Among avian predators Northern Goshawks and Rough-legged Buzzards nested (the latter in small numbers), while Gyrfalcons and Northern hawk-owl did not (the latter did not nest from 1988 regardless of vole numbers). We observed invasion of crossbills, waxwings and Great Spotted Woodpeckers (White-winged Crossbill started nesting in March). Numbers of Red Squirrels, Mountain Hares and mustelids increased, and one brood of wolves was found. Good yield of berry shrubs and spruce seed was recorded. All groups of birds had high reproductive success due to warm and dry weather in summer, which is also supported by results of counts of broods of waterfowl and grouse in forest zone. |
